Whether you're refreshing garden beds or starting a new landscaping project, getting the right amount of mulch saves money and trips to the store. Use our free calculator below, then read on for pro tips on depth, coverage, and costs.
The mulch formula is straightforward:
Cubic Yards = (Length ร Width ร Depth) รท 324
Where length and width are in feet, and depth is in inches. The 324 converts everything to cubic yards (27 cubic feet per yard ร 12 inches per foot = 324).
| Depth | Coverage per Cubic Yard | 2 cu ft Bags Needed |
|---|---|---|
| 2 inches | 162 sq ft | 13.5 bags |
| 3 inches | 108 sq ft | 13.5 bags |
| 4 inches | 81 sq ft | 13.5 bags |
| 6 inches | 54 sq ft | 13.5 bags |
| Mulch Type | Per Cubic Yard (Bulk) | Per 2 cu ft Bag | Best For |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hardwood Bark | $30โ40 | $3.50โ5 | General landscaping |
| Cedar | $35โ50 | $4โ6 | Insect resistance |
| Pine Bark | $25โ35 | $3โ4.50 | Acid-loving plants |
| Cypress | $20โ30 | $3โ5 | Budget option |
| Rubber | $80โ120 | $7โ10 | Playgrounds (lasts years) |
| Free (city) | $0 | โ | Budget beds (call your city!) |
Quick rule: Under 3 cubic yards โ bags. Over 3 cubic yards โ bulk delivery.
A typical 2 cu ft bag covers about 8 square feet at 3 inches deep. For a 200 sq ft garden bed, you'd need ~25 bags at $4 each = $100. The same volume delivered in bulk costs about $60โ70, plus $40โ60 delivery. For small jobs, bags win. For big jobs, bulk wins.
At 3 inches deep, you need about 12-13 bags (2 cu ft each) for a 100 square foot area. That's roughly 0.93 cubic yards. At $4/bag, budget around $50.
A cubic yard of mulch weighs 400โ800 pounds depending on type and moisture. Dry pine bark is lighter (~400 lbs), wet hardwood is heavier (~800 lbs). A full-size pickup truck holds about 2โ3 cubic yards.
Most organic mulch should be refreshed annually โ add 1โ2 inches on top of existing mulch each spring. Full replacement every 2โ3 years. Rubber mulch lasts 10+ years but costs more upfront.
Yes, as long as total depth stays under 4 inches. If existing mulch is matted or moldy, rake it up first. Adding 1โ2 inches of fresh mulch over decomposed old mulch is the standard practice.
